It may surprise you to know that skeletal muscle mass accounts for 40-45% of your total body mass. It is essential that your hormones (whether male or female) are optimal in order to see significant results from your workouts. Hormones, including estrogen, testosterone, growth hormone (GH), and insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) all play a role in the regulation of skeletal muscle mass and adaptation of muscle to resistance exercise. It has also been shown that resistance exercise actually increases the concentration of testosterone, as well as GH, and IGF-1 which leads to increased protein muscle synthesis which results in increased muscle mass.
As we all know, testosterone (which is a metabolite of cholesterol) is an androgenic anabolic hormone produced by the Leydig cells in testes (in men) and ovaries (in females). Systemic testosterone is uptaken by the muscle through certain cytoplasmic receptors called androgen receptors which stimulates myocellular signaling and thus altering the muscle structure, fiber type and myocellular metabolism. Once testosterone is bound to the androgen receptor it gets converted into Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) via 5-alpha reductase which is an even more potent hormone. Testosterone affects the development of bone, connective and neural tissue which in turn affects (increases) muscle mass, strength, endurance and power. During resistance training, luteinizing hormone (LH) is secreted from the anterior pituitary which then acts on the testes to secrete more testosterone.
